samenvatting: "Left of Queer" examines historical and theoretical developments in the evolving field of queer studies since the 2005 Social Text special issue "What's Queer about Queer Studies Now?" In particular, it focuses on three themes: first, it explores the possibilities of an expanded subjectless critique by interrogating not only the formative exclusions of queer studies but also the contingent material conditions through which "proper" queer subjects and identities emerge today; second, it reexamines long-standing debates on materialism and the incommensurability of queer studies and Marxism; and, third, it provincializes strands of queer critique by investigating the institutionalization of queer studies as a subset of American studies/US area studies. Throughout, it explores how emergent theoretical debates on debility, indigeneity, and trans revise and rework subjectless critique, histories of materialism, and queer studies as American exceptionalism by examining how the sublation of these key terms produces, manages, and animates new queer subjects for recognition in the political sphere.

samenvatting: This article argues that the development of queer theory as a field has been critically shaped by a desire to dissociate the studies of gender and sexuality from material concerns. Though what is meant by 'the material' varies wildly from context to context, queer critiques of materialism have produced an entrenched impression of the incommensurability between queer theory and Marxism. Tracing the varied ways in which the notion of the material has been deployed by queer critics to pose questions about the economic reductionism of Marxism, empiricism, and corporeality, this article demonstrates that the material has functioned as a kind of spectral presence in queer theorizing, an enabling form of haunting that keeps critics worrying productively about the best way to stay true to the radically anticipatory orientation of early queer theory. The specter of the material provides the epistemological foundation for canonical texts in queer theory that do not appear to be concerned with Marxism, such as those of Butler and Sedgwick; it also serves as the conceptual fulcrum for a number of "queer Marxist" projects that attempt to synthesize these two traditions. This article concludes by suggesting that, instead of viewing queer theory and Marxism as intellectually incompatible or historically successive projects, we might productively reconceptualize them as subjectless critiques commonly concerned with the problem of social structuration.

samenvatting: This roundtable asks what queer studies might offer to an analysis of debates on campus safety. New approaches in queer studies take as their object of study not only sex and gender but also the cultural politics of liberalism; in turn, scholarship on the geopolitics of injury demonstrates the situatedness of both identity and economic forms. Brought together, these scholarly approaches provide an important lens on many of the contradictions of contemporary college campuses. Rendering classrooms and other places on campus as intrinsically embedded in global relations of militarization, securitization, dispossession, and risk management, ?'afe space' is elaborated in this roundtable in material, administrative, and pragmatic terms: from the conceptualization of alert systems to the racialized fears driving insurance calculations for international study programs to the struggles over academic freedom and student organizing.

samenvatting: As one approach to the left of queer, the authors explore the juncture between queer studies and disability studies. Queer disability studies offers ways of conceptualizing the world as relationally complex, thus contributing additional pathways for the long project of rethinking justice in light of the critique of the liberal individual who is the bearer of rights. Debility, disability, care, labor, and value form a complex assemblage that shapes policies, bodies, and personhood. Putting disability and debility in relation to each other creates perverse sets of social relations that both constrain and produce queer potentialities, connecting affect and action in unexpected ways. A queer materialist focus on nonnormative labor opens the possibility of revaluing domestic work and caring labor generally as a first step to shifting relations between disabled people and those who do the work of care. Building social solidarity from the ground up requires both a queer theory of value and a geopolitical model of disability as vital components for queer materialism. Through a combination of embodied narrative and activist examples, the analysis frames the complexities of care and possibilities for a similarly complex coalitional politics.

samenvatting: This article considers the queer problem of Indigenous studies that exists in the disjunctures and disconnections that emerge when queer studies, Indigenous studies, and Indigenous feminisms are brought into conversation. Reflecting on what the material and grounded body of indigeneity could mean in the context of settler colonialism, where Indigenous women and queers are disappeared into nowhere, and in light of Indigenous insistence on land as normative, where Indigenous bodies reemerge as first and foremost political orders, this article offers queer Indigenous relationality as an additive to Indigenous feminisms. What if, this article asks, queer indigeneity were centered as an analytic method that refuses normativity even as it imagines, through relationality, a possibility for the materiality of decolonization?

samenvatting: The authors formulate "queer reconstellations" as a way to push the field of queer studies beyond its critical settlement in programmatic thinking that often organizes the field in predictable pathways. They also challenge those deviations that do not fundamentally transform the field's subjects and objects. Using "left of queer" as at once a provocation, a nodal point, and a pathway into the arts of being ungovernable, this afterword proposes a constellated approach for wagering methods, histories, ideas, and cases that weaves objectless critique not as telos but as a necessary experiment for expansive thinking, writing, and doing what has not yet been thought, written, or done. To constellate queerness in this planetary mode is to hold on to the different methods and analytics proposed by this special issue?s editors and contributors as necessary rearrangements that may redefine and revivify our cognate fields. In this regard, the authors are inspired to meditate on a broad spectrum of theoretical musings and projects that have taken hold of the field of queer studies, especially in the United States, while asking for more transnational, decolonial, and global South thinking and practices that are at once perverse and world making for our own islands of misfit toys.

samenvatting: In Feminist Media Studies investigating the media coverage of feminism repeatedly found a dual tendency of mainstream media to either demonize feminism or normalize it within the neoliberal discourse. The theoretical understanding of this phenomenon is grounded within the queer feminist theory developed in the 90s. However, most empirical research focuses on the feminist wave of the 70s, thus presenting a discrepancy between the theory and the object of the study. This study aims to fill this gap via a content analysis of the media coverage of the contemporary feminist movement Non Una Di Meno. Combining a quantitative content analysis of mainstream media articles on the movement with an in-depth claim analysis of both the articles and selected documents published by the movement itself, I intend to demonstrate that when it comes to its mainstream media representation, feminism loses all its radicality. Somewhere in the process, the movement claims and analysis, the very reason for its existence, got lost in translation.
